POKOTABI / Hakkoken
中華そば 八光軒
Discover Hakkoken in Kyoto's Fushimi Ward, where a Showa-era dining atmosphere sets the stage for pork-infused soy sauce chuka soba, chashu noodles, and generous plates of fried rice and yakisoba sets.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Slide open the front door, and a friendly greeting welcomes you into the nostalgic atmosphere of a Showa-era canteen. Located along a thoroughfare in the Nōsho Kishinoshita area of Fushimi Ward, Hakkoken stays bustling with lunchtime regulars looking for a thoroughly hearty meal.
The signature chuka soba features a light, clear pork-bone broth enlivened by the clean salinity of soy sauce in an unpretentious, comforting style. Crisp shredded scallions and beansprouts are piled over firm, straight thin noodles, beneath which rest generous slices of tender braised chashu pork. Diners wanting a meatier bowl can opt for the chashu-men, where an ample layer of pork covers the noodles beneath. The menu also offers a variety of other soup bases, including miso, salt, and cloudy paitan, each of which can be ordered with extra pork.
A popular complement to the noodle bowls is the fragrant yakimeshi fried rice. Flecked with chopped pork, this rustic side pairs naturally with ramen for a thoroughly filling meal. Hot-plate staples such as the yakisoba set and yaki udon set also have dedicated fans, often ordered as the savory aroma of sizzling sauce wafts through the dining room. In the hotter months, the summer-only reimen arrives mounded with shredded cabbage, cucumber, and pork in a wide bowl.
Seating includes both regular tables and a raised tatami area, where sharing tables during the busy lunch rush remains standard canteen practice. Operating hours are strictly for lunch, running from 10:00 to 14:00, with Sundays closed. Payment is cash only, and a dedicated free parking lot is located along the alleyway just behind the north side of the shop.
